Ten years ago...
We married on a little boat
Ten years ago, we boarded the Yakima ferry sailing from Anacortes to Orcas Island, Washington, with a few of our closest friends and family, and said I do. It hailed, there was a windstorm, the sun peeked through the clouds, and a rainbow appeared, all reminiscent of what the next ten years would be like.
But one thing has remained as the waves have caressed the hull: we’ve stayed on the boat together.
Sometimes our lifejackets were fastened—a few lifebuoys thrown overboard just in case—but mostly these last ten years have been that of an adventurous cruise (though I still haven’t seen a wild whale). But two were born and climbed aboard, and our ship continues to sail.
I’m grateful for the life we’ve built, the friends and family who have kept our family afloat, and the fact that this is only the beginning.
Our ferry has carried us from the Puget Sound to Canadian waters, where it now circles. I’m still hoping it will set its sights on warmer seas one day, but for now, our touques are donned, scarves up to our eyeballs, and arms wrapped tightly around one another and our two porpoises that breach a little too early in the morning. But this is all pretty wonderful if you ask me.

This is probably my favorite piece you’ve ever written, Kima. So heartfelt. I relived that magical day as I read, and was so impressed with the analogies you used because they were spot on. I’m so thankful you two found each other and then fought for each other. Happy Anniversary from the bottom of my heart ♥️
So lovely, Kima ❤️. I remember seeing some of these images 10 years ago, and marveling at the beautiful moment you and Eric crafted. Happy anniversary!!
